Sandra Giles has been teaching college-level English since 1991 and has been at ABAC since 1997. She's a native of Tifton, having learned to drive in the rodeo parking lot, and graduated ABAC herself in 1987. She holds a PhD in English from Florida State University, specializing in Creative Writing and Rhetoric-Composition. Other than reading and writing, hobbies and interests include dance, tai chi, singing, herb gardening, and letting her three cats in and out from the porch.
Dr. Giles specializes in the teaching of writing, both creative and academic, both lower-division and upper-division. A recipient of teaching awards at Florida State (2003) and ABAC (2012), she publishes articles and presents at conferences on various aspects of the teaching and learning of writing, particularly the relationship between reflection and revision.

Dr. Giles regularly involves students in research or in work-related experiences outside of the classroom. For example, in Introduction to Writing and Communication, her students complete a mini-internship related to their career goals in order to gain work experience and begin networking. Dr. Giles assists her students and advisees in locating internship opportunities and helps them toward career and/or graduate school opportunities.
Dr. Giles has also directed Senior Capstone Projects for Writing and Communication majors, focusing on topics related to Creative Writing and Rhetoric.
