Do you love your community and want to help it grow socially, economically, and culturally? Do you want to help people in rural communities gain better access to healthcare? As a student in ABAC’s interdisciplinary Rural Community Development program, you will learn how to look at the challenges faced by rural communities through a lens of cultural and social responsibility and apply critical thinking skills to develop solutions. With two degree tracks to choose from, you can shape your degree to prepare you for your chosen degree field or for additional study in a graduate or professional program.
What You Will Study:
You will receive the same phenomenal general education core that all ABAC students study in their first two years as a Stallion. In these classes, you will learn and work alongside students from every single major on campus, gaining insight from and sharing experiences with a diverse cross-section of the student body. Following your core curriculum, you will dive deep into several areas of study focused on building your skill set.
In the Community Health track, you’ll study topics including:
• Professional communications and writing
• Community health policy
• Healthcare information technology
• Epidemiology or healthcare finance
• Rural education
• Social psychology
• Public relations
• And more!
In the Social and Community Development track, you will study:
• Professional communications and writing
• Food and agriculture policy
• Economic development
• Family and children’s services
• Community health policy
• Sociology
• Race, class, gender, and sexuality studies
• And more!
In both tracks, you will intern with local community health and development organizations, building not only the hands-on skills you need to thrive in your chosen career, but also making valuable contacts and creating a network of support that will be ready to help you succeed after graduation.
