ABAC Bainbridge students headed to Scotland for study abroad

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Bainbridge students will be roaming the Highlands during a study abroad opportunity this May.

The Scotland trip is part of the University System of Georgia’s “USG Goes Global” program, which offers opportunities to students in any of the USG’s schools. Students explore popular destinations and earn academic credit toward their degree through courses taught by USG faculty.

ABAC Bainbridge professor Dr. Dave Nelson is leading the trip, which is scheduled for May. He has been leading study abroad classes in Scotland since 2011 and encourages all students to consider attending such a program before they graduate.

"Study abroad is a transformative experience,” he said. “Not only did it personally enrich me when I was an undergrad but having it on my resume played a role in several of the jobs I was later hired for."

Students will spend two weeks in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland which is world-renowned for its architecture, university and Edinburgh Castle as well as being home to some of the world’s most well-known writers. Students will also have the opportunity to visit Glasgow, Stirling and St. Andrews as well as the Scottish Highlands, lochs and glens.

"Edinburgh is the best classroom I can imagine,” Nelson said. “We stand on the exact spot where historical events actually occurred, from the birth of King James to the burning of accused witches to standing on the ground over Black Death burial pits. History and literature literally come alive on these programs."

“ABAC Bainbridge offers its students the opportunity to see the world,” said Dr. Michael Kirkland, Executive Director of ABAC Bainbridge.  “With our academics, students can start here and finish here.  With the extra-curricular opportunities we offer, they can start here and see the world."
